<image:caption>Paris is a wonderful, romantic city that everyone knows, so you’d think finding Paris hidden gems would be impossible. Indeed, many places in the city can feel like Disney World with huge crowds & a touristy vibe, e.g. the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre… And you’d be hard pressed to find a local feel in any of them. BUT you’re in luck! We’ve been to Paris over a dozen times & love discovering the off the beaten track things to do, restaurants, etc. Here our top hidden gems of Paris for things to do in the city & where you can have more of an authentic Parisian experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 14 Hidden Gems of Paris for 2025 - 10. Sainte-Chappelle: The Prettier Alternative to Notre Dame: Bucket List Paris</image:title>
<image:caption>While 90% of tourists flock to Notre Dame cathedral, you’ll get a more visually gorgeous experience at Sainte-Chappelle, a former royal chapel which is just 8 minutes walk away. The gigantic, very colorful stained glass windows create a very special effect, and a bit of a spiritual experience. To be sure, Sainte-Chappelle can get crowded, but it is very beautiful and unique (speaking from someone who’s visited far too many churches across Europe). It’s bucket list Paris! Photo by Sasha Lezhnev. Also just nearby is the Conciergerie, where Queen Marie-Antoinette was imprisoned, worth a visit. Hot tip: Avoid the crowds by going right when the church opens at 9am. You’ll have a better experience for sure. Just double check the opening times on the website before you go in case of any last minute changes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Montmartre, a famous neighborhood in the north of Paris, is home to Sacré-Coeur basilica and is an art mecca — it’s where famous artists from Edgar Degas to Henri Matisse to Toulouse-Lautrec to Pierre-Auguste Renoir in the 19th century made their home. It’s also where photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson took some of his most famous shots, and today where you can see many artists paint on the street. Two hidden gems of Paris in this iconic neighborhood, and one fascinating café:</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 14 Hidden Gems of Paris for 2025 - 4. Rodin Museum: Wonderful Boutique Museum where the Artist Lived</image:title>
<image:caption>While 90% of tourists flock to the Louvre and the Musee d’Orsay, the Auguste Rodin Museum is one of the hidden gems of Paris that doesn’t have the huge crowds. You can see the famous Thinker, as well as some of his other most famous sculptures, including The Burghers of Calais, The Gates of Hell, and Balzac, and dozens of other of his gorgeous works. It also has a really lovely outdoor rose garden and area to walk around, which feels like a breath of fresh air in central Paris. The museum is in an 18th century mansion, so it feels like walking through a château rather than a modern museum.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 14 Hidden Gems of Paris for 2025 - 7. Berthillon: Some of the world’s best ice cream, in the oldest part of Paris</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re strolling around or near the Île de la Cité in central Paris, go and stop for an ice cream at Berthillon. It’s been around since 1954, and for a reason. This Paris hidden gem is some of the best ice cream we’ve ever had anywhere, and we go back every time we’re in Paris. They’re famous for reportedly using only high quality ingredients, and their sorbet is a secret recipe. Photo by Stephan Valentin. Explore the oldest part of Paris: Berthillon is also a lovely way to enjoy walking around the area where the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral is located, explore the often sleepy Île de la Cité, the oldest part of Paris, and enjoy the Seine River. Hot tip: This is just behind the Notre Dame cathedral (an 8 min walk), so it’s a great stop after seeing it, and also on the banks of the Seine River.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 14 Hidden Gems of Paris for 2025 - 5. The Marais: Take a Stroll in this Charming Area</image:title>
<image:caption>The Marais on the right back of the Seine is a wonderful area to walk around for hours and hours and window shop, sip champagne, have a cappuccino, etc. To be fair, the Marais isn’t that hidden, but it’s a great bucket list Paris area that is definitely not the Louvre or Eiffel Tower, and tons of locals go and hang out there as well. There are so many excellent restaurants, bars, small boutiques of all kinds, historic places, and more in the Marais. It’s also the old Jewish quarter and LGBTQ+ area of the city. There’s also a really good gourmet food & walking tour of the Marais that we recommend, where you get 2 tastings & learn from a really good guide. Top things to do in the Marais: Walk the winding streets: Arguably the best thing to do in the Marais is simply wander around the narrow, winding streets and discover the half timbered houses, the carved masks above the doors, etc. It’s charming—and free!</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 14 Hidden Gems of Paris for 2025 - 3. Angelina’s: To-die-for Hot Chocolate close to the Louvre</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the best cups of hot cocoa you’ll ever have — and drink it in a James Bond-like setting — is at Angelina’s cafe near the Louvre museum. Angelina’s has been around for 120 years, and it makes the most famous of the hot chocolate cafés in Paris. ☕ It’s a classy, old school café, and it’s a lovely afternoon experience just sipping on the hot chocolate and having a piece of cake. It’s also a nice break if you’re visiting the Louvre or nearby tourist attractions of central Paris. Speaking of which, here’s a great way to skip the lines at the museums nearby, including the Louvre. Hot tip: It can get crowded, so try to go early to avoid long lines/queues.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 14 Hidden Gems of Paris for 2025</image:title>
<image:caption>Hot tip: The best kept secret of the opera is that they offer last-minute tickets for almost free! (ok, 10 euros). The tickets open up 2 hours before the performance at the side entrance, so you just have to stand in line then, get your tickets, and come back for the opera time. They’re “partially obstructed view,” so you may have to lean over to see, but you still get to experience the Paris opera! We’ve done it several times, and it’s fantastic. If you don’t want to stand in line 2 hours ahead of time, you can also get discount opera tickets here. Treat yourself and get a coupe of champagne in the intermission for the full experience. Hot tip 2: If you’re under 28 or over 65, the opera offers discounted non-obstructed view tickets for €35 for a ticket to an opera, €25 for a ticket to a ballet or concert/recital, or €10 for a ticket to a Sunday chamber music concert. Getting there: 3 minute walk from the Metro Opéra (lines 3, 7, and 8).</image:caption>

<image:caption>200 million-year-old dinosaur tracks: The Moenkopi dinosaur tracks from the Jurassic Era are near Tuba City, AZ, about 1 hour south of Page. They’re really cool for adults and kids alike. Keep your eyes peeled for the small sign & follow the Google directions for Moenkopi — it’s a basic dusty parking lot. It’s is on the Navajo Reservation, so pay a local guide a small fee to take you around and show you the tracks. There’s also a dinosaur museum worth visiting in New Wave trail: A short hike with gorgeous striations in the sandstone similar to the Wave & only 10 minutes from Page. Hot tip: You do need some kind of higher clearance vehicle to access Buckskin Gulch or the Nautilus area. Not necessarily a 4x4, but something that can navigate rough roads. Hot tip 2: Camp for just $14 a night at the Beehive camping area 10 minutes from Page. It’s super convenient and cheap.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 11 Best Places to Visit in the Southwest - Things to do in Carlsbad Caverns:</image:title>
<image:caption>Do the self-guided tour: The main way to see the cave is through a self-guided tour, where you can explore the Big Room and much more. It’s a 1.25 mile loop walk in total, with some short hills. You need to make a reservation in advance, but it only costs $1. Enter via the natural entrance: The natural entrance to the cave, which you can go down by foot to see the cave. We recommend that if you/your group is fit enough to do the long way. Do a special guided tour: There are a few tours of special areas of the caverns that are guided by park rangers. These are popular, and you need to reserve tickets in advance. In particular, we recommend: King’s Palace (short and just wow) and Lower Cave (you get to descend on ladders and see the cave pearls that were on National Geographic and the Texas Toothpick).</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 11 Best Places to Visit in the Southwest - Things to do in Chaco Canyon:</image:title>
<image:caption>Walk everywhere. The staggering thing about Chaco Canyon is the sheer number of the buildings—there are 13 sites in total. And you can walk all through them, unlike 90 percent of ruins elsewhere. See the Great Kiva: This is the biggest kiva in the park, called Casa Rinconada (photo above). It’s magnificent and only a 1/2 mile walk to get to it from the parking area. ️ Walk around the mega complex of Pueblo Bonito: There are SO MANY buildings to walk around and through, but the central area of Pueblo Bonito (pictured, photo by Sasha Lezhnev) & Chetro Ketl are major highlights. There are hundreds of structures to explore. Hike the Pueblo Alto trail: Be sure to save some time to hike this awesome trail. It goes up a slot canyon to the top of the plateau, and then you get expansive views of the ruins and hike to the Pueblo Alto.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 8 Best Sonoma Wineries: The Ones You Need to Know - 7. Carol Shelton: Excellent Sonoma winery for full bodied wines Taste from an award-winning woman winemaker Innovative, very accessible, and affordable, Carol Shelton Winery is a pleasure to taste at. Carol is a well known winemaker who became famous for her single vineyard Zinfandels, but she makes many other wines as well, some of which we preferred to the Zins. She’s one of the most famous woman winemakers in Sonoma and has won several awards. The staff is also very friendly and happy to give you tips about other places to visit in the area. We enjoyed the Zinfandels but the wines we loved the most were the Coquille Blanc, a white Rhône blend, and the “Blue Tooth” Alicante Bouschet, a Bordeaux-like Portuguese blend. Blue Tooth goes very well with steaks.</image:title>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 8 Best Sonoma Wineries: The Ones You Need to Know - Hot tip:</image:title>
<image:caption>Region is located in the Barlow, a fantastic complex in Sebastopol that has some of the best quality eating and drinking anywhere. There are several great restaurants, a fantastic coffee shop, an excellent bakery, a beer brewery, an organic grocery store, and more. You can spend a whole day just there, literally. Highlights for us are: Taylor Lane Organic Coffee, excellent espresso drinks. Fern Bar restaurant/cocktail bar. Both the food and cocktails are top notch and creative. Wm Cofield Cheesemakers, delicious locally made cheese (to pair with all that wine). Hot tip 2: Region organizes high quality wine dinners with winemakers that pair their wines with different courses. We did one and recommend it. See the schedule here. Details: No appointment needed. Wine bar in downtown Sebastopol, down the street from Pax.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 10 Underrated National Parks You Have to See - Things to do in Chaco Canyon, an underrated national park:</image:title>
<image:caption>️ Walk around the mega complex of Pueblo Bonito (pictured, photo by Sasha Lezhnev). Hike the Pueblo Alto trail. See the Great Kiva. For more info about these activities, see our more detailed Southwest blog. Where to Stay: For more info about where to stay, see our Best Places to Visit in the Southwest blog. Getting there: Chaco Canyon is a 3 hour drive from Albuquerque or Santa Fe. We strongly recommend a high clearance vehicle (4x4 not necessary, however) because the last several miles are very rough. But this also makes the park not crowded, which is a major plus.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Like Patagonia in the U.S.: Stunning glacial lakes & hikes at this 2nd least visited national park in the lower 48 states. Go to North Cascades if you like: Patagonia, Norway, fjords, great hikes, mountain scenery, gorgeous lakes, nature with solitude. North Cascades National Park, about 2 hours from Seattle, offers absolutely stunning hiking for many different levels. Shockingly, it’s actually off the beaten path, making it probably the most underrated park in the country — North Cascades gets only 0.5% of the visitors that Yellowstone or Yosemite get. It also has absolutely gorgeous blue glacier-fed lakes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 10 Underrated National Parks You Have to See - Top things to do in North Cascades National Park:</image:title>
<image:caption>Hike to Diablo Lake: The spectacular lake in the photo above is an easy to moderate 3.4 mile, 675 feet elevation hike called Thunder Knob. It starts in a lovely alpine forest and then you get spectacular views of the lake along the hike and at Thunder Knob. Update: Tragically, at the time of writing there is a wildfire at Diablo Lake. Hopefully it will be put out soon.... ️ Go for a scenic drive: The North Cascades Highway is gorgeous, and you’ll want to stop and get out to take pictures all over. The views of Ross Lake, Diablo Lake, and many mountains are stunning. Hike Maple Pass (pictured - photo by Sasha Lezhnev). This was our favorite hike. It’s hard — 7.4 miles, over 2,000 feet elevation gain, and essentially an all-day affair. But it’s well worth it — you get spectacular 360 degree views of mountains from the top, and amazing alpine lake views along the way.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 8 Underrated Countries You Should Visit in 2025 - Hot Tip: Combine a safari and beach trip, and even a Mt. Kilimanjaro climb if you’re up for it. Zanzibar is a very short plane ride or ferry trip from Dar es Salaam, the biggest city in the country. Bring layers: Keep in mind that the weather is VERY different in each of those areas. Zanzibar is hot and humid, and Kilimanjaro is quite cold — and freezing if you get to high elevations. Hot Tip 2: Stay and eat at a unique place in Zanzibar, a Japanese-Zanzibari place in Paje with some of the freshest sushi I’ve ever tasted — Paradise Beach Bungalows. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. When we stayed there, they asked us in the morning, “what kind of sushi do you like? We’ll try to catch it today and serve it you for dinner.” ✈️ Getting there & visa: You need a Tanzania visa but can get one online easily. The biggest city where flights go is Dar es Salaam, but you can also book a flight directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport or Zanzibar. If you do go to Zanzibar, we recommend the short flight, which is only 40 minutes and cheap, as the ferry docks are not fun arrival points.</image:title>

Berat on the Osum River in the south of the country, is a 2,400-year-old city with an ancient castle and “the city of a thousand windows” on the old Ottoman homes. The tour below is great! Go river rafting in the Osum River canyon. It’s a fantastic outdoor adventure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Go wine tasting: Two wine regions are just next to SLO - Paso Robles and Edna Valley. Paso is home to full bodied wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, and Edna specializes lighter bodied wines like Pinot Noir. Our top picks for wine tasting: RN Estate (Burgundian style wines) Écluse (personal experience) Turley (top Zinfandel) Kynsi (great Pinot Noir) Dine at Il Cortile. Our top restaurant & bar picks in SLO: Neapolitan pizza or pasta at the Flour House The Wine bar Region, which showcases locally made wines. See the elephant seals: It’s endlessly entertaining to see the giant elephant seals who stop for the winter to breed and relax at San Simeon (we’ve been 4 times). It’s very special to see them take care of newborn babies, grunt, do battle, and more.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 9 Hidden Gems in California You Have to See in 2025 - More things to do in the San Diego area:</image:title>
<image:caption>Do a stunning hike. Here are 2 of the best: Potato Chip Rock is a unique rock that juts out into the valley like a… Lays potato chip. Potato Chip is a 7.4 mile somewhat strenuous hike, so come prepared, but it’s very cool thing to see. Annie’s Canyon — an amazing hidden gem of California, slot canyon that will make you think you’re in Arizona. Yet it’s only a mile from the beach & only 30 minutes from the center of San Diego! It’s short (2 miles) but awesome. Go on a weekday. There are also many other great hiking areas — we’re working on an in-depth blog about San Diego now. Have brunch or see beautiful gardens in Tony Hawk’s hometown. Encinitas is a cool beach town with great brunch spots, Moonlight Beach, the lovely Swami Self-Realization gardens, and home to skateboarding legend Tony Hawk (yep, he still lives there). Hot tip: Some of the best ice cream we’ve ever had is at Gelato 101 in downtown Encinitas.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 9 Hidden Gems in California You Have to See in 2025 - More things to do in West Sonoma</image:title>
<image:caption>Eat at phenomenal farm to table restaurants: The dining in West Sonoma is especially delicious because, in part because the ingredients are grown all around you in Sonoma County. We like the restaurants here as much or more than those in San Francisco. Our top picks: Hazel (Occidental), Fern Bar (Sebastopol), Piala (Sebastopol), Boon (Guerneville). Have a pint of “America’s best beer” at the brewery: Pliny the Elder beer was rated as such, and you can drink it and other well crafted beers at the place where they make it, Russian River Brewing Co. in Santa Rosa. We love this place, and after all, it’s on the “Don’t Kick the Bucket Before You Visit These Bucket List Breweries.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 9 Hidden Gems in California You Have to See in 2025 - We’ve visited many of the redwood parks up and down the coast, and our favorite is Jedidiah Smith Redwoods State Park near Crescent City. It’s not crowded, there are absolutely wonderful walking and hiking areas for all levels, the redwoods are ginormous and old, and the gorgeous old growth forests feel barely touched. Even the drive through the park is amazing. It’s real off the beaten travel.</image:title>
<image:caption>Our top tips for hikes in Jedidiah Smith are: Grove of Titans (1.7 miles, family friendly) Simpson-Reed trail (1 mile, family friendly) Fern Falls (magnificent waterfall, 7.8 miles, moderate). You can pay to drive through a couple of giant redwood trees. Just make sure your car fits (some have gotten stuck). There is: Shrine Tree near Eureka Chandelier Tree near Leggett, and Klamath Tree an hour north of Eureka.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 9 Hidden Gems in California You Have to See in 2025 - More things to do & hidden gems on the Sonoma Coast:</image:title>
<image:caption>Visit historic Fort Ross. See a fascinating little part of American history, a 19th century fort where a small group of Russians settled for 30 years to attempt to grow food for their Alaska colony. There’s a chapel, museum, and historic wood cabins. Visit Sea Ranch. Sea Ranch is a fascinating planned community with houses that blend into the natural landscape. Dine in their high-end restaurant (or have a drink at the bar) with magnificent, sweeping ocean views. Take a walk outside on the ocean cliffs. Hot tip: You can actually combine a visit to the Sonoma Coast with a trip to the redwoods (and even a winery, if you’re ambitious) on a single day-trip from the San Francisco Bay Area. Armstrong Redwoods State Park or the Landpaths Grove of Old Trees are only half an hour from the Sonoma Coast. We’re working on a detailed Sonoma blog now, so stay tuned.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Highlights: Beautiful lake, historic churches, swimming & boating, delicious local wine, & lively nightlife. Go if you like: Unwinding at a lake, Greece, budget travel, gorgeous blue water, Ibiza, Croatia, Balkan culture, European history, or if you’re just tired of touristy places! Enjoy swimming in crystal blue water, having excellent restaurants and fun nightlife, and exploring fascinating cultural sites but not paying an arm and a leg for it? Lake Ohrid between North Macedonia and Albania fits the bill. There are unique ancient churches and historical sites to explore during the daytime & fun bars at night. Ohrid is popular among people in the Balkans – there are many local Macedonians, Serbs, Albanians, Croats, etc. who vacation there, but it still has few international tourists, giving it a local, off the beaten travel feeling.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 9 Top Hidden Gems in Europe: Best Vacation Spots for 2024 - More things to do in the Rhône Valley:</image:title>
<image:caption>Visit charming towns in Provence. The Rhône Valley is adjacent to Provence, a very charming countryside with many historic sites and towns: Arles (pictured - photo by Lucas Miguel), which was painter Vincent Van Gogh’s former home and home to a famous Roman amphitheater. Orange, home to a spectacular, even bigger Roman ampitheater. Aix-en-Provence, an underrated, charming town where artist Paul Cézanne is from. A really cool thing to do in the area is a Lavender & distillery tour. Lavender is grown in Provence & you get to learn how to grow aromatic plants & visit the distillery. Dine in Lyon. The Rhône Valley is also 45 minutes from Lyon, France’s 3rd largest city and a foodie paradise. Many of France’s top restaurants are in Lyon. We recommend: Les Apothicaires, Michelin rated, memory of a lifetime. Monsieur P, amazing French food, and Boleh Lah, excellent Malaysian fusion.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Go if you like: Napa Valley, wine tasting, Bordeaux, Tuscany, relaxing countryside, Roman ruins, castles. Enjoy wine but don’t want to pay hundreds for tastings and be carted around on tourist trap tastings? The Rhône Valley in southern France is maybe the best place in the world to taste world-class wines while still getting an authentic experience of meeting the winemakers and feel like you’re really exploring wine country on your own. We love it so much that we’ve been twice. You can even stay in a French château (castle)! Plus the Rhône Valley is in a spectacular location: southern France. Combine wine tasting with a few days exploring the south of France.</image:caption>

There are a number of waterfalls and hikes there. You can do several on on your own for free. We recommend the Mt. Britton Trail and then continuing to El Yunque Peak. It takes about 3 hours and is about 5 miles. La Coca Waterfalls are fantastic & by the roadside. You can climb right up next to them and get sprayed. Go zip lining: there are several options for zip lining. Have a look at the reviews and see which one looks best for you.</image:caption>

The famous beach town of Budva is awesome for nightlife, partying, and restaurants if you are looking for that, and has beautiful, if busy, beaches at Jaz and Becici. Gorgeous Lake Kotor in the mountains is a highlight, with an wonderful walking area in the old city of Kotor and water activities such as boating and paddleboarding on the lake. Durmitor National Park is a spectacular destination for hiking and exploring nature, or white water rafting. <image:caption>San Diego is one of the best spots for beach vacations in the US year-round because of the weather. You can enjoy the beach almost the entire year, with an average high of 66 degrees in January and 76 in July. We’ve lived in this area for over six months at different times and love it — it’s one of our favorite places to be in the US. Best hidden beaches around San Diego: Oceanside (pictured, photo by Sasha Lezhnev) is 45 minutes north of San Diego city and has wonderful hidden beaches that are much less crowded than those in the city. ‍♂️ It’s great for beginner surfers (or learning how to surf), as it’s a sandy beach, but there is also more advanced surfing with bigger waves at the pier. Oceanside is also the most affordable beach town in the area. Here are some places to stay in the area.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 10 Amazing Underrated Cities to Visit - More to do in Hermanus:</image:title>
<image:caption>Go wine tasting: Hermanus is close to several wineries. We recommend: Bouchard Finlayson (about 20 minutes away, stunning views, good Pinot Noir & Chardonnay) Spookfontein Wines (special restaurant in the winery with a modern vibe). Newton Johnson Family Vineyards (see photo — stunning setting with a view of the mountains, personal experience). Photo credit: Newton Johnson. Creation has wonderful wines and an exquisite tasting menu. Dine at farm to table restaurants: Hermanus is close to the bountiful Hemel en Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley, so it has farm fresh food at several good restaurants. Check out The Wine Glass (restaurant) which has a fantastic wine selection (including flights) and fantastic wine and food pairings. Plus it’s just next to Gearing’s Point, one of the best whale watching spots. The Pear Tree Bistro just nearby has fresh seafood (their poke bowl is just wow) as well as vegan options, and is one of the best spots in town.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 10 Amazing Underrated Cities to Visit - Taste port wine</image:title>
<image:caption>Porto is the center of the world for port wine. So do a little tasting while you visit. You can either go to the port wineries themselves, which are all located across the river in Gaia, or go to a wine bar in Porto. We recommend doing both. Our top picks are: Cockburn’s, one of the best port wine cellars. You can take a tour with a reservation, or just taste at their really good tasting room with no reservation. We did the latter and loved it. It’s owned by the same company that owns Dow’s & Graham’s, so you can also taste those ports also (and a few still wines). Prova Wine Bar (decent port wine bar next to the river where you can sample a variety). De Lima’s Bar (a wine tasting experience). Or head to the Douro Valley (see below).</image:caption>

Kenya produces some world’s best coffee. Try it fresh here and enjoy a delicious latte at one of Nairobi’s best coffee shops, Connect Coffee, Jowam Coffee Roasters, or the Nairobi Java House. Stroll around Uhuru Park. Uhuru Park in the center of the city is once again a lovely large urban park after a recent renovation in 2022. It’s a meeting spot for locals and now has a food court, a kids play area, and is home to the new Nairobi Festival. Have a fun night out. Quench your thirst and put your dancing shoes on, because Nairobi is one of the liveliest cities after dark on the continent. Our top tips for going out are: Geco Cafe for live music. Kulture Lounge, a classy lounge. MUZE, fun dancing to Kenyan music.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Try rakia (or rakija) at one of Belgrade’s best bars and/or go clubbing: One of the best things of Belgrade for us is its vibrant nightlife, both in bars and clubs. And the fruit brandy rakija is found all over the Balkans but pours like water in Belgrade’s bars. Try it at Rakia Bar & Shop (fun bar) Druid Bar (hidden bar, amazing cocktails) Bitters Bar (delicious cocktails) Gunners Pub (craft beers on tap). Or check out BoemBar (pictured) with good local food and a big range of drinks. Photo credit: Raxit Gamit. Take a day trip: The smaller cities of Novi Sad and Smederevo, both on the Danube River, make for excellent day trips. Smederevo has a fascinating 15th century fortress. European Cultural Capital of 2022, Novi Sad is a relaxing city with charming cafés, a charming pedestrian-only area, and is close to the wineries of Vojvodino.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We’ve traveled to 50 countries on 5 continents & have been full-time travelers for the past 2 years with our now 5-year-old son. <image:caption>While we’ve all heard the sentiment habibi (my dear), come to Dubai, there are many tourist attractions and memorable moments to be had in Abu Dhabi, the capital emirate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Middle East. Abu Dhabi is a bustling city within the Persian Gulf, and offers endless things to do within its borders and it's over 200 islands. As an expat of four years, I’ve been able to scout out some of the best kept secrets of Abu Dhabi! Where is Abu Dhabi? Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE, which is a Middle Eastern country that shares a border with other notable countries like Saudi Arabia and Oman. The UAE offers a unique blend of cultures, with 80% being expats and the local Emirati population showcasing their pride in their culture through significant events, foods, and traditions.</image:caption>

From food to clothes to kitchenware to souvenirs or electronics. Whatever it is, you will find it here. We were looking for an adapter and spices and found both in no time. Add Minor Mosque (pictured - photo by Nadine Blamberger) to your Tashkent list. If you are a woman, bring a head scarf so you will be allowed to enter. Minor Mosque was completed in 2014 and can house more than 7,000 worshippers. Hot tip: Beware that before and after the Friday prayer it will be crowded. The prayers take place from 12am to 2pm.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Start out at Registan Square in Samarkand (50,000 sums/ 3,80€ entrance fee). The ensemble at Registan Square consists of three medreses: Ulugbek Medrese, built in the 15th century, Sherdor Medrese and Tillakori Medrese (both from the 17th century). When the first medrese was built in the 15th century, all parades, festivals and holidays were held in this square. The Sunday bazaar had its place here, too. Today there are beautiful backyards in each of the three buildings, with plenty of options to shop for souvenirs, sit down for tea, and soak up the unique atmosphere. Getting there: Take a train from Tashkent to Samarkand (3,5 hrs, 90,000 sums/ 7€).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lake Aydarkul is like a mirage in the middle of the Uzbek steppe. It consists of fresh and salt water and is the perfect refreshment after the bumpy car ride. We came here just for a short stopover and a swim, but there are also some few options to stay the night. You can stay at a yurt camp along the shore in the west. Hot tip: Bring your swimsuit for the lake! After the ride through the Uzbek steppe there is nothing more refreshing than taking a swim in the lake. Getting there: From Ukhum it takes about 2 hrs to get to Aydarkul Lake. A private car or taxi are the only options to reach the lake.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hot tip: Across from the Minor mosque's entrance and across the road, there are steps down to the riverside and a beer garden-like restaurant. You won't find actual beer here, but the best somsa in town (called samsa in some areas). Somsa (pictured - photo by Nadine Blamberger) is a classic of Uzbek street food. It is composed of a flour and butter pastry filled with minced beef or lamb. Here it’s served with a typical Uzbek tomato dip and kompot for drinks.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Nurata Mountains (pictured, photo by Nadine Blamberger) are a real hidden gem in the area. They’re the perfect spot for you if you like to leave the crowds behind. This is my top tip for Uzbekistan if you are into nature and hiking. You will get rewarded there with amazing views and the most friendly and hospitable people. Go for a hike in these mountains less traveled. In Ukhum you can stay at Ulugbek's Guest House, which is located at the end of the village. The road is narrow and rocky, so keep in mind that not every driver might take you to the doorstep. Our driver actually quit some 1.5 km before we reached the place and we walked the rest of the way. But this is all part of the adventure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Are you into Disney and fairy tales? Then Magic City, an attraction in central Tashkent, is the place for you! (pictured, photo by Nadine Blamberger). The entrance is free. It’s an especially great place for kids, because they have it all: a games hall, a Disney castle, paddle boats, movies, and more. You can also bring your own food and have a picnic in the close-by park and wait until the sun goes down to enjoy the fountain and lights show. Hot tip: Check out the fountain and light show at Magic City, every night at 9pm. If you want to get soaked, stay close to the water :) The first 3 to 5 rows get wet! (we were in the 2nd row and... got soaked ).</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 8 Best Things to Do in Uzbekistan - 8. Khiva: One of the Most Wonderful Things to Do in Uzbekistan</image:title>
<image:caption>Take the night train from Bukhara (8,5 hrs, 255,000 sums/10,50€) and wake up early in the morning to the town of Khiva in the far west of Uzbekistan, close to the border of Turkmenistan. I recommend spending 2 days here. The old city center with its famous landmark — the half finished blue minaret — are impressive. Hot tip: Get an ice cream from one of the many mini markets (blombir is my top choice: vanilla cone in a waffle, 0,35€), take a seat on a bench with views of the old city, and enjoy the moment as the sun slowly sets. Day trips: From Khiva you can take a private car to the Aral Sea for a day trip (100 kms) and see the shipwrecks in Moynak in this remote area. Pass by Topraq-Kala (10,000 sums /0,75€ entrance fee) the former royal residence of the kings, on your way back to town. Take the night train back to Tashkent again (14 hrs, 315,000 sums/ 15€).</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - 8 Best Things to Do in Uzbekistan - 7. Bukhara: Ancient Persian city: A Must-Do in Uzbekistan</image:title>
<image:caption>After you have spent some time in the countryside, come back by car to Samarkand and take the train to Bukhara (3,5 hrs, 90,000 sums/ 7€). This town is my favorite one in Uzbekistan. You can easily spend 3 days here and enjoy the atmosphere that is both relaxed and lively at the same time. Bukhara is more than 2,000 years old and was a major trade and crafts center along the silk road. Its historic city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993. With its unique architecture, the famous Kalyan Minaret from 1127 AD, the Ark, the city fortress, covered bazaars, carpets and handicraft, you will feel as if you have entered the universe of Aladdin.</image:caption>

<image:caption>☕️ Sip on some of the best coffee in the world. Kenya produces some world’s best coffee. Try it fresh here and enjoy a tasty latte at one of Nairobi’s best coffee shops, Connect Coffee, Jowam Coffee Roasters, or the Nairobi Java House. Our top tips for going out are: Geco Cafe for good live music. Kulture Lounge, a classy lounge. MUZE, a fun place to dance to Kenyan music.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - Top Destinations in Africa: 7 Hidden Gems - More things to do in Tanzania:</image:title>
<image:caption>You can do two or all three of those things on one trip, in fact. Kilimanjaro takes 5 to 7 days to climb, and you can do it without prior mountaineering experience. Zanzibar is a very short plane ride or ferry trip from Dar es Salaam, the biggest city in the country. Or you can fly directly from Europe. The spectacular beaches and vibrant Swahili culture are fantastic. Hot Tip: Combine a safari and beach trip, and even a Mt. Kilimanjaro climb if you’re up for it. Bring layers. Keep in mind that the weather is VERY different in each of those areas. We’ll try to catch it today and serve it you for dinner.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ethiopian jazz night. Fendika (pictured) is one of our favorite jazz clubs anywhere in the world. Listen to local musicians playing a fusion of Ethiopian and western jazz on local and international instruments in a cloth-ceilinged venue with a fire pit and local Tej honey wine. Photo by Sasha Lezhnev. Try Ethiopian craft dark beer. Selo Tella bar is a new, very local brewery to try tella, traditional Ethiopian beer, they have several different kinds to sample. Eat tasty, unique Ethiopian food. Ethiopian food is to die for in many ways. Our top picks are Agyet, an Ethiopian Gurage restaurant specializing in Kitfo (ground spiced meat) and Habesha 2000 (touristy but tasty food and cultural dancing).</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest travel posts - Top Destinations in Africa: 7 Hidden Gems - More things to do & hidden gems in Hermanus:</image:title>
<image:caption>Go wine tasting: Hermanus is close to several wineries. We recommend Bouchard Finlayson (about 20 minutes away, stunning views, good Pinot Noir & Chardonnay) Spookfontein Wines (very good restaurant in the winery, modern vibe) Newton Johnson Family Vineyards (see photo — stunning setting with a view of the mountains, personal experience). Photo credit: Newton Johnson. Dine at farm to table restaurants: Hermanus is close to the bountiful Hemel en Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley, so it has farm fresh food at several good restaurants. Check out The Wine Glass (restaurant) which has an awesome wine selection (including flights) and fantastic wine and food pairings. Plus it’s just next to Gearing’s Point, one of the best whale watching spots. The Pear Tree Bistro just nearby has fresh seafood (their poke bowl is just wow) as well as vegan options, and is one of the best spots in town. The Saturday farmers market, the Hermanus Country Market, is worth checking out as well.</image:caption>

<image:caption>See the chimps. Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a fantastic place where you can trek to see rescued chimpanzees. It’s about half an hour from the capital Freetown. Visit Bunce Island: A 45 minute boat ride from Freetown, Bunce is a fascinating place to visit. It was one of the main slave points in West Africa, and you can see the ruins of the former fort and learn all about the trade up-close. Learn to cook local food: We loved Sierra Leone’s food, which has a lot of spice, fresh seafood, and fresh, organic ingredients. Learn how to cook it in this class by Salone Hidden Gems. Hot Tip: If you want to see primates in the wild, Tiwai Island is a fantastic destination. There are 11 species there, from colobus monkeys to chimpanzees.</image:caption>
